Sharjah Media Corporation
Sharjah Media Corporation (SMC) is a government organisation dedicated to developing the media industry in the emirate, established by Emiri Decree no. 25 in 2009. The television and radio channels and entities operating under the broadcaster’s umbrella include Sharjah TV, Sharjah Sports Channel, Al Sharqiya Channel of Kalba, Al Wousta Channel of Al Dhaid, Sharjah 2, Sharjah Radio, Quran Radio of Sharjah, and the Sharjah Media Training Centre.
The organisation seeks to develop sophisticated and pioneering national media frameworks to enhance the role of the media and advance its performance based on the principles of professionalism, excellence, creativity, responsible freedom and abiding by media industry codes and ethics.
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated Sharjah TV in 1989 as ‘UAE Television of Sharjah’ to serve as a beacon of culture, thought and authentic values deeply rooted in UAE society and the greater Arab region.
His Highness recommended that the channel should enter Emirati households in a respectful and modest manner by providing a series of diverse programmes addressing social, cultural and political issues.
Among the most prominent programmes broadcast by the channel are its daily talk show ‘Good Morning Sharjah’, evening talk show ‘Amasi’, that hosts prominent personalities to discuss an array of social and cultural topics, and ‘The Direct Line’, which addresses people’s issues and concerns, serving as an extra bridge between government and residents.
Sharjah Radio was officially launched by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in 1972. It was then called ‘The UAE Radio of Sharjah’. In 2015, the station celebrated its 45th anniversary with a new brand identity under the name ‘Sharjah Radio’. Since its inception, Sharjah Radio has firmly established its status as an outstanding media platform providing contemporary news and current affairs.
Sharjah Sports Channel
Sharjah Sports Channel began transmission in 2007 under the umbrella of SMC as an independent sports satellite television channel and a platform dedicated to providing media and field coverage of a diverse spectrum of sporting events, tournaments and championships. The channel has specialised studios at sports events to provide in-depth analysis and coverage.
The Sharjah Sports Channel organises the annual Sharjah Sports Desert Festival (SSDF), and covers major sporting events such as the Arab Women Sports Tournament, Formula 1 Powerboat Racing, Sharjah Cycling Tour and Belgian Football League, among other local, Arab and international sporting competitions.
Sharjah 2 Channel first transmitted in July 2007 under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to cater to viewers from various nationalities in their native languages.
It broadcasts religious, cultural, social and sports programming in English, Persian and Urdu. The channel reflects SMC’s vision for educating Muslims and introducing them to true Islamic values and teachings.
Al Sharqiya Channel of Kalba
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, opened Al Sharqiya Channel of Kalba on February 16, 2014. It serves as an interactive media platform that focuses on the Eastern Region’s issues, highlighting the area’s outstanding natural beauty and heritage.
Al Wousta Channel of Al Dhaid
Al Wousta Channel of Al Dhaid started its broadcast on September 5, 2016 under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. It is the fifth satellite TV channel that falls under the SMC umbrella. Al Wousta TV serves as a bridge linking Sharjah’s past with its present, reflecting the region’s rich heritage, archeological treasures and the cultural life of its residents, comparing desert life with rapid urban, architectural and economic development.
Quran Radio of Sharjah
Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the Quran Radio began transmitting on February 15, 2012.
Quran Radio enjoys a huge listener base due to its mission to serve the holy book of Allah and its dedication to helping Muslims memorise, understand and apply its teachings.
The station, which transmits a series of diverse religious programmes around the clock, aims to provide media content that is derived from the Islamic Sharia under the supervision of experts in the Holy Quran and a select group of media professionals.
Sharjah Media Training Centre
Sharjah Media Training Centre specialises in theoretical and practical media development as well as administrative and management services related to media organisations.
The centre strives to enhance media skills and practices in the emirate of Sharjah, and offers media training and development consultancy to government and private organisations.
